10H: 11/6/15

Today we are going to work with partners to edit our work.

Read your partner’s essay, and respond to the tasks below.

For each bullet, YOU MUST WRITE SOMETHING on your partner’s page.

The key rule for the activity, though, is to not talk to your partner.  Your entire understanding of your partner’s work must come from the work itself.

  • Identify the thesis (underline, bracket, highlight, etc.)
    • Does it explicitly use the word “theme”?
    • Is the identified theme one word?  It shouldn’t be.
    • Is the theme too wordy?  How can it be shortened and clarified?
    • Does it make sense?
  • Identify the topic sentences (underline, bracket, highlight, etc.)
    • Do they use the same language as the thesis?
    • Do the topic sentences explicitly use the word “theme”?
    • Does it seem repetitive?
  • Is the reference to a metaphor valid?
    • Is the word “metaphor” used?
    • Is there a clear statement identifying the metaphor along with a valid explanation?
      • _________ is a metaphor for __________ because …
    • Does the reference to the metaphor help to prove the topic sentence & thesis?
  • Is the reference to a symbol valid?
    • Is the word “symbol” used?
    • Is there a clear statement identifying the symbol along with a valid explanation?
      • _________ is a symbol for __________ because …
    • Does the reference to the symbol help to prove the topic sentence & thesis?
  • Are the quotes effectively introduced?
    • Is the tone of a quote identified?  Not required, but a logical way to utilize an analysis of tone.
  • Can you find three words in this essay which can be eliminated?  In other words, can you take out the word without changing the meaning of the sentence at all?  If so, the word is not necessary.

HW:
